Untitled, Commission
2011, Urban Institute of Contemporary Art, Grand Rapids, MI
Untitled, 2011, is a site-specific piece that was selected from an international competition for the Urban Institute of Contemporary Art’s new facility in Grand Rapids, MI. Installed above a bar area at the entrance to an experimental theatre, Untitled is comprised of over twenty boxes and niches of varying heights, designed to be functional for the bar to use or for other artists to fill.
Untitled creates a shallow-relief typography of language that hovers between the potential for meaning and the absence of it. Made of commercial signage material, it fragments and repeats language used in both art and real estate, words like construction, property and value. Installed at a social hub in the building, the piece’s bold contrast and shifts in scale evoke the spirited sounds of overlapping conversations.
